Having taught four sessions of the summer tutorial class, each lesson remains quite an emotional challenge for me. However, last week, when the president’s wife shared with me that many of these children come from single-parent homes, foreign-spouse families, or are raised by their grandparents, my perspective shifted completely in an instant.

Facing a child who was difficult to guide, I asked him to sit at the back by himself. I knew he had ADHD and struggled to settle down, so I lowered my expectations to the absolute minimum—asking only that he color a single page, simply to help him gradually build patience. The child broke into tears in front of me, asking why I was singling him out. I hope that in the future, he will come to realize I was doing it for his own good.

The wealth gap in Taiwan is widening day by day. I am not so grand as to think I can change the world, but since I am his teacher for even a day, I want to do as much as I possibly can.

I can never forget how my former chemistry and physics teacher used to call on me first whenever he asked a question. My science was terrible, but I knew he did it to push me to preview and review the lessons, so that I would work hard on my own after returning home. I am truly grateful for everything my teacher did. And I hope that one day, this child will understand me, too.
