Yesterday, I saw a piece of news on Facebook that deeply moved me—conceptual and performance artist Shih Chin-Hua passed away in a car accident. I was overwhelmed with emotions.

I first encountered his work during a visit to the Taitung Art Museum. That trip was a bit rushed, so I only managed a quick glance, leaving me with a fleeting impression. Recently, I saw his work again at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. This time, I carefully read the introduction beside his piece and came to realize how truly remarkable he was.

Due to his health condition, he began monitoring his body at the age of 17. His most famous work, Walking Pen Series, uses a pen as a metaphor for life—he would walk until the ink of the pen ran dry before stopping. This symbolizes the journey of life itself, with each pen representing a cycle of reincarnation. The traces left by the pen resemble the marks one leaves behind in life.

It is heartbreaking that such a brilliant talent was taken too soon. Artists devote their entire lives to creation, but who truly understands the hardships they endure?
