Art and Painting

When I first started learning to paint, I thought that …

When I first started learning to paint, I thought that students’ works were merely paintings, while those by renowned masters were art. It wasn’t until I chatted with Teacher Ji that I began to understand. At first, I couldn’t quite grasp it and thought it was a bit convoluted. But after carefully considering the logic and meaning of the words, I realized that painting is painting, and it’s very difficult to transcend into art. Recently, as I’ve been preparing for an exhibition, I’ve come to understand that to infuse painting with ideas requires a lot of groundwork. It’s not just about depicting appearances, but reaching this point demands a lot of practice and understanding. Lately, I’ve been practicing acrylic techniques. Technique is just one way to express painting, but technique alone is not enough—it must be paired with thought. I’ve read Kandinsky’s Concerning the Spiritual in Art for the third time, but I still can’t fully grasp its meaning. The principles seem simple, yet they’re difficult to comprehend and even harder to internalize. It takes time to apply them in creation. All I can do is keep working hard. Keep going!
